Evolution: Lending a Helping Hand in Sperm Competition?

چکیده
Most females mate with many males. This can be costly, but the benefits to females are often unclear. A new study raises the possibility that females could benefit through an unconventional genetic pathway, while also showing that males can inadvertently increase rival males' fitness in surprising ways.

The evolution of sperm-allocation strategies and the degree of sperm competition.
The prevailing viewpoint in the study of sperm competition is that male sperm-allocation strategies evolve in response to the degree of sperm competition an ejaculate can expect to experience within a given mating. If males cannot assess the degree of sperm competition their ejaculate will face and/or they are unable to facultatively adjust sperm investment in response to perceived levels of co...
متن کاملEvolution: The Paradox of Sperm Leviathans
Sexual selection theory predicts that sperm competition will push males to produce more, smaller sperm. Paradoxically, in the fruitfly Drosophila bifurca sperm competition is rife but males produce few, giant sperm--the largest known. A recent study reconciles the evolution of giant sperm with theory.
متن کاملProteins Involved in Motility and Sperm-Egg Interaction Evolve More Rapidly in Mouse Spermatozoa
Proteomic studies of spermatozoa have identified a large catalog of integral sperm proteins. Rapid evolution of these proteins may underlie adaptive changes of sperm traits involved in different events leading to fertilization, although the selective forces underlying such rapid evolution are not well understood. A variety of selective forces may differentially affect several steps ending in fe...
متن کاملEvolution of ejaculates: patterns of phenotypic and genotypic variation and condition dependence in sperm competition traits.
Sperm competition is widely recognized as a potent force in evolution, influencing male behavior, morphology, and physiology. Recent game theory analyses have examined how sperm competition can influence the evolution of ejaculate expenditure by males and the morphology of sperm contained within ejaculates. Theoretical analyses rest on the assumption that there is sufficient genetic variance in...
متن کاملEvolution of larger sperm in response to experimentally increased sperm competition in Caenorhabditis elegans.
Sperm morphology evolves rapidly, resulting in an exceptional diversity of sperm size and shape across animal phyla. This swift evolution has been thought to prevent fertilizations between closely related species. Alternatively, recent correlative analyses suggest that competition among sperm from more than one male may cause sperm diversity, but these hypotheses have not been tested. Here, we ...
